In actuality, hair doesn’t neatly conform to the established categories of curly, wavy, or straight that we have created over time. It exists in a variety of textures and thicknesses—and requires specific and individualized care. We interviewed five women with stunning tresses to share their personal hair care practices.

Meet Rachel

Heather Hazzan

“I’m of Puerto Rican descent, and my hair is rough and voluminous. I developed an appreciation for my hair at a very young age because straightening it simply took too much time.”

Her Hair-Care Regimen:

  • I only shampoo once per week to prevent dehydration.
  • I untangle my hair by running conditioner through it while I’m still in the shower.
  • I avoid brushing my hair once it’s dry to prevent frizz.
  • I always get my hair trimmed—preferably when it’s dry—by a professional who understands how to handle curls.

Essential Products:

Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner ($20; target.com), Wella Elements Hair Strengthening Serum ($11; amazon.com)

Meet Ansley

I possess tightly coiled hair, which necessitates love and patience. Embracing this texture is the most crucial step in caring for it, as it allows you to experiment and showcase its full potential instead of fighting against it.”

Her Hair-Care Regimen:

  • I rely heavily on natural ingredients in my hair-care routine. Once a week, I create a homemade mask using avocado, egg yolk, coconut oil, aloe vera gel, and jojoba oil, which I apply after cleansing.
  • I co-wash every other day.
  • At night, I gather my hair into a loose bun on the top of my head and cover it with a silk scarf to prevent rubbing against the pillow and causing frizz. In the morning, I use a pick or my fingers to detangle.

Essential Product:

Ouidad Curl Immersion Low-Lather Coconut Cleansing Conditioner ($36; amazon.com)

Daphne

Heather Hazzan

“My mother is Dutch and my father is Indonesian, so my consistency is a combination of newborn-fine and straight and dense and undulating. I slumber with my hair down because if I put it up in a scrunchie overnight, it will have an indentation in it all day. It remarkably clings to anything you do to it.” (

Her Hair-Care Routine:

  • I always use fabric-covered elastics, which are kinder to fine hair and don’t leave imprints.
  • My hair care is minimal. I don’t dye or utilize conditioner to avoid depriving it or burdening it.
  • Once a week I use a purifying rinse.

Product Must:

Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo ($5; amazon.com)

Zazoe

Heather Hazzan

“My hair is fine, but I have a plethora of it. It can be lackluster at the top and undulating at the bottom. I engage in physical exercise frequently, so I have to shampoo my hair often. To compensate, I’ve practically ceased using a blowdryer, so I don’t deprive my hair of all its moisture.”

Her Hair-Care Routine:

  • I condition only the ends, so everything doesn’t go lifeless and lackluster.
  • Once a week, I utilize a moisturizing mask for overall hydration to keep my mane gleaming and smooth.

Product Musts:

Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo ($10; sephora.com) and Hydrating Conditioner ($10; sephora.com), Lush H’Suan Wen Hua Hair Treatment mask ($22; lushusa.com)

“My hair is dense and undulating. Until recently, I straightened it every day. But now this appearance is in vogue, so I emphasize the curl.” (Here are 4 essential tips for how to style undulating and curly hair.)

Her Hair-Care Routine:

  • I utilize a microfiber towel, a cotton T-shirt, or even a paper towel to pat, so I don’t disturb and ruin the texture.
  • Between shampoos, I’ll co-cleanse [that’s purifying only with conditioner] to maintain my hair soft and flexible.
  • To diminish frizz, I’ll employ a spray bottle with water and incorporate a drop of styling cream to it. I sprinkle the mixture onto moist hair, then dry it with a diffuser.

Product Musts:
