Jennifer Aniston might be recognized for her distinctive sun-kissed radiance, but even she isn’t resistant to a faux tan blunder. The actress divulged a comical behind-the-scenes glimpse into what occurred when she failed to properly moisturize before a spray tanning session in a recent Instagram post. And it’s nearly as amusing as Ross’ memorable spray tan fail from season 10 of Friends.
Sharing some pictures and videos from her time shooting the third season of The Morning Show, Aniston posted a clip of herself in a robe with her foot in a sink while a friend scrubs off the orange remnants of her fake tan.
“Reminder to self, hands and feet you must moisturize before a spray tan, otherwise…a predicament,” she informed her followers, displaying her orange-tinted hands. “This is what love is,” quipped Aniston, referring to the kind individual washing her feet.
Fortunately, evading a phony tan catastrophe is actually quite simple, whether you visit the spray booth or utilize a lotion-based tanner, two professionals inform Shape. Aniston’s initial error, as she mentioned, was not moisturizing before her spray tan session, says tanning expert Jordan Cook. “Moisture is essential to a flawless tan — before and after,” she shares.
Regarding how to properly prepare for a faux tan? “Before your tan, moisturize your entire body and then give yourself about two hours for your skin to absorb it all,” says Cook. “Moisturizing immediately beforehand might dilute the tanning product, so this will prevent that from happening if you wait a little bit.”
You’ll want to pay special attention to the “hands, feet, knees, elbows, and any other extremely dry areas you don’t want the tan to adhere to,” adds celebrity makeup artist and tanning expert Tarryn Feldman.
There are other methods to help ensure a smooth, blotch-free tan, says Feldman. “The best way to prepare the skin before a tan is to shave and exfoliate — it’s the key to an even tan,” she explains. Feldman loves the St. Moriz Advanced Pro Exfoliating Skin Primer, noting that it “flattens and evens the skin surface for the perfect application and results.”
Fake tan enthusiasts should be particularly consistent with their daily moisturizing, which will also help seal in the tan and keep it looking fresher for longer, adds Cook. “Every day, apply your preferred oil-free moisturizer all over the body to maintain your tan’s luster,” she advises. “Oil-free is a necessity since oil breaks down tanning ingredients. You can’t over-moisturize, so don’t hesitate to keep hydrating your skin.”
These recommendations are relevant regardless of your skin type, tone, or texture, as well as your preferred tanning method, according to both Cook and Feldman. If you’re a fan of at-home tanning lotion, Feldman suggests the ultra-hydrating St. Moriz Professional Instant Medium Self-Tanning Lotion.
Moriz Professional Instant Medium Self Tanning Lotion, which “can serve as your daily body lotion,” she states. This progressive bronzer offers a realistic radiance, and it’s “enriched with aloe vera and vitamin E, so it leaves the skin feeling extremely smooth while developing a stunning day-to-day tan,” adds Feldman.
Regarding Aniston, let’s trust that she was able to resolve her spray tan “scenario” in time for the cameras to begin filming.
